The U.S. Capitol was placed on lockdown on Thursday afternoon after reports of shots fired in the area, according to NBC Washington.  Several people in the area report hearing multiple shots.  The lockdown was lifted around 3 PM.

The suspect has been identified as Miriam Carey, a 34-year-old woman from Stamford, Connecticut.  She appeared to be attempting to gain access to the White House.  Carey was at a checkpoint and tried to go around a barrier.  A chase led to Capitol Hill.  According to a police source, all of the shots fired came from law enforcement and was not armed.  Reports say that Miriam Carey was killed by US Capitol Police.

There was a young child in Carey's car.  The child was taken to the hospital.

One police officer was injured and was taken to the hospital via helicopter.  He appeared to be conscious and breathing.  It is believed that the officer was injured in a vehicle accident and was not shot.

Police say that there is no indication that this incident is related to terrorism.
