Thousands of motorists were photographed running red lights since cameras were installed at Jacksonville intersections earlier this year.
o far this year, a company called Redflex has installed 17 of the cameras at some of the city's most dangerous junctions. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reviews the photos taken by Redflex and decides whether or not the driver was in the wrong.
In the first month and a half since the cameras were installed, 2,869 violations have been sent to drivers.
"If I reduce crashes, then I know that's going to reduce injuries," JSO Director Micheal Edwards said. "If I reduce injuries, that's going to reduce the number of fatalities we have in this city."
Edwards says it's still very early for a thorough report card because the cameras have only been active for a couple months at most. But red light cameras have been reducing crashes.
