Funeral Service For First Black U.S. Navy Seal To Be Held Friday

The funeral for America's first Black Navy SEAL will be held later this week in Norfolk, Virginia. Eighty-seven-year-old William Harvey Goines died last week.

He helped establish the Navy SEALs program in 1962, earning the Bronze Star, the Navy Commendation Medal and several other honors during his career.

He retired from the Navy as a master chief petty officer in 1987 after 32 years of service. He worked as a school system police chief in Virginia after his retirement.

His funeral will be held Friday at the Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church in Norfolk.
