Governor DeSantis Divvies Out $100 Million For Beach Recovery After Storms

Helping Florida's shoreline recover from the battering it took from Hurricane's Ian and Nicole was the focus of Governor DeSantis's visit Wednesday to a beach vehicle access point in Daytona Beach Shores. During last month's special session state lawmakers approved $100 million for beach erosion projects around the state. The governor announced who gets how much.

"Here in Volusia," Governor DeSantis said, "out of the $100 million we're allocating, $37.6 million will go right here to Volusia County."

A number of homes along the beach in Volusia County were deemed unlivable after Ian tore through. Lee County will receive $23 million, Flagler County will get $17 million. It's in addition to $20 million awarded to several local governments in November to immediately address erosion concerns.

“I am pleased to announce another step to expedite recovery of our communities impacted by these historic storm events. This funding will support beach restoration needs, allowing us to rebuild and further enhance resilience," the governor said.

A wide, nourished beach system absorbs wave energy, protects upland areas from flooding, and mitigates erosion.
