Florida Grocery Shakeup: ALDI Buys Winn-Dixie, Harveys Supermarkets

JACKSONVILLE -- A shakeup in the grocery business means changes for a couple of grocery brands with decades of history behind them.

ALDI, a German-founded supermarket chain that has been growing rapidly across the U.S., says it has an agreement to acquire the Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket chains. The Winn-Dixie brand has been around since 1955 when it was created from the merger of two earlier groups. Harveys dates back to 1924 in south Georgia and has been used by current parent Southeastern Grocers as an alternative, economy-focused brand.

ALDI says it plans to convert some of the nearly 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys locations to the ALDI brand, while leaving others running with their current brands. The transaction is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
