A Tampa man was arrested Wednesday after stealing a pair of boots at an Islamorada store and fleeing into the mangroves Da’Veon Hassan Fleming, 29, is charged with larceny and resisting arrest.
Police say Fleming stole a pair of boots at approximately 11 a.m. The Sheriff’s Office located the suspect vehicle near the Snake Creek Bridge and the suspect, identified as Fleming, was located nearby. He fled and hid in the mangroves.
Fleming was spotted crawling through murky water near Snake Creek. Initial attempts to place him in custody on foot or by boat were not successful.
Fleming was spotted again at approximately 6 p.m. He fled into the mangroves again and swam to a pylon and held onto it but was taken into custody with the help of a civilian mariner. The Florida Highway Patrol assisted in the incident.
