Governor Ron DeSantis says the Congressional map should be redrawn mid-decade because the population explosion has thrown everything out of whack.
He points to South Florida needing a mid-decade redo because of unconstitutional racial gerrymandering.
DeSantis also agrees with President Trump that a new census is necessary because there are defects in current map and many districts are malapportioned due to recent explosive population growth in Florida.
DeSantis says the Biden administration admitted to mistakes in the 2020 census, which would have afforded Florida another congressional seat.
That census was counted during Trump's first term.
Florida currently has 28 Congressional seats while California has 52.
DeSantis says if a new census is taken, the state could garner 3-4 new seats and at that point redistricting would be mandatory.
The Florida Legislature is on board with convening a mid-decade redistricting process this year. The House Speaker, Daniel Perez announced the creation of a Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting.
The Constitution allows another census to be taken mid-decade during years ending in a five.
