FLORIDA - Florida lawmakers are advancing a proposal to rename a prominent stretch of road in Palm Beach County after President Donald J. Trump, marking a symbolic recognition of his influence in the state.
On Wednesday, the Florida Senate unanimously passed an amended version of House Bill 987, a transportation bill that includes various honorary road designations.
Among the changes was a provision to rename a four-mile segment of Southern Boulevard as “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.”
The area in question spans from Kirk Road, just south of Palm Beach International Airport, to South Ocean Boulevard near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.
The bill, which originally passed the House earlier in the day, must return to the lower chamber for final approval due to the Senate's modifications.
If the House concurs, the measure will go to Governor Ron DeSantis for his signature.
In addition to honoring Trump, the Senate’s version of the bill includes a designation in Orlando.
A portion of West South Street would be named “Geraldine Thompson Way,” in tribute to the late state lawmaker who passed away in February.
Thompson, a respected Democrat, served in both the Florida House and Senate and was known for her work in education and civil rights.
The proposed renamings are ceremonial and would not involve infrastructure changes or new expenditures.
If approved, the designations would take effect July 1st, 2025.
The bill is part of Florida’s ongoing tradition of recognizing notable figures through roadway naming, adding Trump to a growing list of honorees throughout the state.
